UQ hosts Queensland Cup
Posted by Ben, Thursday 3 May 1:09am

The annual Queensland Debating Championships are being hosted for the first time by UQ, on Sunday, May 13. The Queensland Cup, as the tournament is known, is a great chance to get some more debating under your belt, to experience debating against other unis (particularly if you haven't had a chance to go to an intervarsity tournament yet) and is generally a really fun day, ending in a bit of an after party. As well as all of that, UQ has won and been runner-up at the last two Queensland Cups, so it'd be nice to keep that tradition going.
The day consists of three debates plus a grand final competed by the top two teams, followed by an after party. We will provide food through out the day.
If you'd like to come along, either speak to Externals Officer Tom directly or send an email to uqds@hotmail.com saying that you're interested and your preferred speaking position. Apart from that, if you have any questions please feel free to ask.

UQDS victorious at Easters
Posted by Ben, Sunday 22 April 10:39pm

For the first time, UQ has won the Australian Intervarsity Debating Championships, commonly known as Easters, held at the University of Sydney over the Easter long weekend. The team of UQ4, comprising Alice Heathcote, Nihal Kumta and Oliver Badenhorst, defeated Melbourne 7 to win its first ever intervarsity tournament. Three other teams from UQ ranked in the top 16 although one was prevented from continuing due to a three team institutional cap. Adjudicators Erin O'Brien, Rob Leeds and Tom Gole also continued through to the later rounds but were unable to adjudicate the final due to conlfict of interest. This result is arguably the best ever achieved by the UQDS.

About the UQDS

Since the 1960s, the UQDS has been Queensland's most active university debating society. We aim to provide the necessary training for our members to become proficient debaters, recognising that lively debate plays an important part in any society.

Our weekly, year-round internal competition is great fun for everyone, from those who have never debated before to experienced debaters. All members have the opportunity to benefit from the range of intervarsity tournaments to which the UQDS regularly sends teams. There are tournaments for every level of speaker, from novice to experienced, held in Australia, the Asia-Pacific and around the world.

We at the UQDS are committed to raising our profile as a strong debating society. In recent years we have hosted our share of tournaments with true Queensland flair and participated in many more with great distinction. See our Debating page for more information on the tournaments we have hosted and in which we have participated.

This website acts as a gateway to our activities, both for members and those who are simply want to find out more about us. Click on the tabs at left to see what's new, what social events we have planned, who our executive members are and much more.
