About Us
The University of Queensland Debating Society (UQDS) is one of the oldest and most active student societies of the University of Queensland and is one of the most successful debating societies in the world. With a grand tradition of debating success and social engagement, we aim to foster a welcoming environment for all members (regardless of debating experience, university degree, or high school background) and we aim to be a successful and top debating society on the world stage.
As was described in 1936 March edition of Semper Floreat (the UQ Student Magazine), "the Society offers a unique opportunity to undergraduates to express themselves on all sorts of heterogeneous topics, to deliver their pet heresies and to slander their friends in a comparatively sheltered academic atmosphere."
Our internal competitions are designed to help novices and beginners learn debate technique in a fun and informal setting as well as provide challenges and development to our more experienced members. Indeed, the UQDS has been consistently ranked in the top ten debating universities worldwide in recent years. Your membership means you can participate in a competitive weekly tournament on campus during semester, represent the University of Queensland at tournaments all over Australia and the world, receive training from some of the country's most awarded debaters, and enjoy regular social events with a diversity of fellow students.
