Internal Competitions
The Internal Competition of Semester One and Semester Two each year are held on Tuesday evenings and we welcome all new comers and first time debaters. We begin each night with training at 6:00PM in E215 of Forgan Smith Building at St Lucia Campus, followed by pizza at 6:45pm at the Pizza Caffe.
We aim to foster a welcoming environment for all members regardless of debating experience, university degree or high school background. Our internal competitions are designed to help novices and beginners learn debate technique in a fun and informal setting as well as provide challenges and development to our more experienced members.

Training
UQDS organises and provides regular training sessions coordinated by our training officers, normally before the weekly internal competitions and major external tournaments. Such training consists of matter seminars conducted by members with specialist knowledge, as well as basic and advanced sessions on debating strategy by experienced and knowledgeable members.
Past matter seminars have included: "Disability, Health and Race", "Science for Dummies", "International Relations", "So You Think You Can Debate About Law", "Economics for Debaters", "Sex, Gender and Sexuality", and "Life, the Universe, and Everything Else in the Social Sciences".

Semester One
For semester one, the UQDS runs two internal competitions in the Australasian Style (3v3).
The first internal competition, entitled the "Pro-Am" competition, runs in the first part of the semester until teams for Easters are released. It is designed to introduce new members and first timers to debating at a university level as well as prepare members for Easters, the first major external competition of the year. This is accomplished through having an experienced member of the UQDS couple up with two new members or first timers - hence the name: professional-amateur competition.
The second internal competition, entitled the Internals competition, runs from the resuming from mid-semester break until the exam period. After the introductory competition at the start of the semester, the open competition allows for all members be debate in a competitive tournament style.
