Rankings and Achievements
As of March 2017, according to the World Universities Debating Council, UQDS is ranked 9th best in the World and 4th best in Australia.
2017 Achievements
In 2017, three UQ teams broke into the finals at the National Intervarsity Debating Championships (Easters). These were UQ1 (Sadie MacDonald, Emily Leggett and Xavier Redmond), UQ2 (Alex Paterson, Tristan Hurree and Thomas Choo) and UQ3 (Tom Parnell, Liam Bond and Sophie Watson). Unfortunately, both UQ2 and UQ3 were knocked out in the octo-final, however UQ1 progressed up to the semi-final.
A special congratulations to Domonique Duggan, who not only broke as an adjudicator, but went on to judge the grand final!

2016 Achievements
At the National Intervarsity Debating Championships (Easters), two UQ teams UQ1 (Charlie Richardson, Tom Parnell and Matthew Lakis), UQ 2 (Antonia Bellas, Liam Bond and Chantel Morris) broke into the finals. Unfortunately UQ1 was defeated in the Octo-Final whilst UQ2 lost in the Quarter-Final.

2014 Achievements
At the National Intervarsity Debating Championships (Easters), three UQ teams UQ1 (James Rigby, Catherine Bugler and Antonia Bellas), UQ3 (UQ3 (Jessica Rusten, Selina Saint-Saëns and Katie Cockburn), and UQ4 (Leo Rees-Murphy, Ben Wilson and Jack Nagy) broke into the finals and three adjudicators Shyaam Raivadera, Tim Chalk, James Risely (also of Griffith/Cambridge) broke into the final rounds. It is also remarkable to note that UQ3 were the only all female team to break into the finals. Unfortunately UQ3 and UQ4 were defeated in the Octo-Final whilst UQ1 lost to the University of Sydney Union 1 (the eventual tournament champions) in a 3-2 split decision adjudication in the Quarter-Final. Also, special congratulations to Shyaam Raivadera for being selected to adjudicate the Grand Final, to Jack Nagy for being awarded equal 10th best novice speaker, and to Jess Rusten for being the highest ranked female speaker and the 5th best speaker overall.
2013 Achievements
All three UQDS teams at the World Universities Debating Championship broke into the Octo-Finals. UQ A (Kristen Price and Anthony Smith) broke 7th, UQ C (Thomas Ashby and Helena Obermair) broke 32nd, and UQ B (Emily Chalk and Alexander O'Hara) broke 34th. UQDS was one of the few debating societies in the world to break all teams into the finals. Shyaam Raivadera, David Stephens and Nick Derrington also all broke into the finals as adjudicators. UQ A made it through to the Quarter-Finals and finished ranked 7 in the world with 21 points. UQ B finished ranked 34 with 18 points. UQ C finished ranked 32 with 18 points.
2012 Achievements
Thomas Ashby and Helena Obermair broke fifteenth into the octo-finals of the Australian British Parliamentary Debating Championships (Sydney Mini).
Emily Chalk and Alexander O'Hara broke fourth into the semi-finals of Melbourne Mini.
David Stephens and Helena Obermair broke into the quarter finals at the Australian National University Intervarsity Debating Tournament (ANU Spring).
Patrick Begley, Kristen Price and Lauren Humphrey ranked 2nd after preliminary rounds at the Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championships (Australs). Anthony Smith, Sarida McLeod and Alexander O'Hara ranked 6th. Lauren Humphrey was 5th best speaker with Anthony Smith and Kristen Price tied for 6th best speaker.
