Introducing the UQ Distinguished Public Debate Series
The University of Queensland Debating Society is privileged to unveil an initiative with the Office of the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Queensland - the UQ Distinguished Public Debate Series. Following in the brilliant traditions of the public debates of the Oxford Union Society and the Cambridge Union Society, the University of Queensland Debating Society will organise a series of public debates with distinguished guest speakers from the realms of academia, law, politics, journalism, civil society, and business. Topics of debate will be contentious, important and relevant and will be debated in the Australasian style of three versus three of seven minute speaking time. This program will allow the cogent exploration of ideas, the mastery of rhetoric and argumentation, the fostering of intellectual discussion and constructive dialogues between prominent speakers, and an accessible and entertaining medium for public engagement. The debates will be open to UQ students, staff and the general public.
University of Queensland Debating Society Trivia Night
In Scientology, what is the name of the intergalactic dictator who, 75 million years ago, brought billions of his people to Earth in a spacecraft, stacked them around volcanoes and killed them using hydrogen bombs? Which country’s national flag features an AK-47 and a bayonet? And what percentage of Qatari women are clinically obese?
If you could answer Xenu, Mozambique, and 45%, or even if you couldn't answer any of those questions, the University of Queensland Debating Society is delighted to invite you to our second social event of the year - our annual Trivia Night.
We will meet at one of the city's most delicious Italian restaurants (and definitely the one with the most pick-your-own-herbs) at 8pm on Saturday 23rd March for a night of pizza/pasta (pay for your own), a little wine (for over 18s, but everyone's invited) and fascinating trivia questions. You can make your own team of six to ten people, or post on this event page that you'd like to be grouped up and we will do that for you.
The see the facebook event for more details.
